History Of Chicham Bridge

Chicham bridge was Completed in 2017. Chicham Bridge is India’s highest road span crossing approximately 150 meters above a tributary of the River Spiti in the Himachal Pradesh region.

Chicham Bridge is also known as the “world’s highest bridge”. Chicham bridge reduced the distance from losar to the Kibbar by 40 km.

When the bridge was not made, there was a ropeway in the crossing and brave locals used to winch themselves from one end to another end. It took 15 years to make Chicham bridge. It was constructed by the PWD contractor, Vijay Kapoor. 

It was inaugurated by MLA Ravi Thakur in the September 2017.Himachal Pradesh Government is taking regular steps to maintain its beauty and heritage in the upcoming future also. 1. Kunzum Pass

1. Kibber Village

Kibber village is the village situated at the height of 14010 ft. at the Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh in northern India. It contains a monastery and it is a base for visiting the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary.

It is located at distance of 19 km from Kaza and  bus service connects them in the summer months. Agriculture forms the backbone of the local economy and lush green fields are abundant.

It is the base for visitors to the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary. It is home to about 30 snow leopards. Treks to nearby peaks and to high pass in the Zanskar range between Spiti and Ladakh start from Kibber.

2. Key Gompa

Key Gompa is the largest monastery of Spiti valley. It is the largest monastery of Spiti Valley and also a religious training centre for lamas. It reportedly had 100 monks in 1855.

The monastery is dedicated to Lochen Tulku, the 24th reincarnation of the great translator Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo. It is about 12 km north from Kaza and 210 km from Manali by road.

It is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Gelugpa sect located on top of a hill at an altitude of 4,166 metres (13,668 ft.) above sea level. It is close to the Spiti River in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, Lahaul and Spiti district, India.

Any bus (Volvo needs pre-booking) from Kashmiri gate ISBT to Kullu, night buses (and HRTC buses) are preferable. You should reach Kullu by 11 am, take a day break. 

Next day at very early morning (~4:30 am), there is a single bus from Kullu to Kaza via Manali. It is nearly impossible to get ticket of that bus from Manali, that is why I recommend you to stay at Kullu.

The second option is to stay at Manali (i.e. take a bus from Delhi to Manali) and pre-book a shared cab/traveler to Kaza for next morning. It would be slightly costlier, but you have two benefits: first Manali, as a place, it is much more beautiful than Kullu, secondly, cab journey is more comfortable.

Distance between Delhi and Chicham bridge is 680.9 km. Start from Delhi at very late night and reach Shimla at early morning. Take break for couple of hours and leave for Narkanda or Rampur as long as your health permits.

 Otherwise, you may start early in the evening from Delhi and stay at scenic Sarahan. Then your day-1 won’t be a waste.

Leave as early as possible for Reckong-peo. From Wangtoo to Reckong-peo the roads are very bad. Take some rest at Peo and leave for Nako. Nako is part of Kinnaur but I hope one should include it in Spiti trip. Tented arrangements near Nako lake are nice.

How To Reach Chicham Bridge By Air

The best way to reach Spiti by air is from Delhi, Chandigarh, or Jubbar-Hatti of Shimla, whatever falls closer to your location. The flights are mostly run in the morning, and the major airline is Air India. 

The flights will take you directly to Kullu Airport. Major cities like Mumbai and others are also inter-connected to the airport. From Kullu Airport, you can hire a cab or board a local bus heading directly towards the towns like Kaza, situated in Spiti Valley.

Alternatively, you can visit Kullu, which is 10 KMs away and have a splendid galore of this city. You may also choose to head towards Manali, it is only 50 km apart, where you can spend your day.

You can easily reach Spiti Valley by taking a bus from either Shimla or Manali. There are around three buses that leave for Reckong Peo in the evening and reach by morning. Same bus takes a halt and picks up more passengers and leave to reach Kaza by evening of the same day.

Meanwhile, if you are traveling from Manali, then you can simply take a bus that leaves in the morning and drops you off in Kaza in the eve of same day. Please note that these buses run only from the second week of June to 15th of October.
